Hemos visto adverbios de frecuencia como always y never, de lugar como here y there, además de otros tipos de adverbios. Aquí nos centramos en los adverbios de modo, es decir, los que responden a la pregunta “¿Cómo?” que en su mayoría se forman añadiendo la terminación –ly al adjetivo correspondiente:
adjetivo + –ly = adverbio

slow slowly despacio/lentamente
quiet quietly silenciosamente
careful carefully cuidadosamente
nice nicely amablemente
quick quickly rápidamente
beautiful beautifully bellamente
En los siguientes ejemplos, compare el adjetivo con el adverbio correspondiente:

I am a very slow reader I read very slowly
Soy un lector muy lento Leo muy lentamente.
He´s a wonderful tennis player He plays tennis wonderfully
(Él) es un estupendo jugador de tenis. (Él) juega al tenis estupendamente.
We speak fluent English We speak English fluently
Hablamos ingles fluido. Hablamos inglés con fluidez.
Algunos adverbios son irregulares, es decir, no añaden –ly al adjetivo, como, por ejemplo, good cuyo adverbio es well:

They are very good teachers They teach very well
Son buenos profesores. Enseñan muy bien.
Hay algunos casos en que la misma palabra se utiliza tanto como adverbio como adjetivo. Tres de los más usuales son fast, late y early:

You´re a very fast driver You drive very fast
Eres un conductor rápido. Conduces muy rápido.
John was early this morning John arrived early this morning
John llegó temprano esta mañana. John llegó temprano esta mañana
The train was late The train arrived late
El tren se retrasó. El tren llegó con retraso
